Things to Do in Lake Como

Monday is the worst day on the lake for villas: Villa del Balbianello, the Villa Serbelloni park tour and the Tempio Voltiano are all shut, and Balbianello shuts again on Wednesday. Tuesday takes Villa Monastero out from February to October, and November and December take Wednesday as well. Sunday is the cathedral's day off for tourists, not for worshippers.

Villa Carlotta inverts the whole logic: rather than a weekly closing day it publishes a list of open dates, and every date not on that list is closed, though the villa will let you in on a closed day if you write to segreteria@villacarlotta.it first.

Two closures are open-ended rather than dated, and both are worth knowing before you build an itinerary. The Orrido di Bellano's published hours table simply runs "from 25 October" with no end date, so there is no winter closing day to plan around, only a shorter day. And Villa Carlotta's 2027 season has not been published at all: the calendar stops on 8 December 2026 and nothing follows it.

The three services, in the operator's own words

The battello is the ordinary boat: slow, calls almost everywhere, priced by a stretch band from 1 to 8. The servizio rapido is the hydrofoil or catamaran, and it is not a separate fare but the ordinary fare plus a fixed speed supplement of $1.75 to $6.41 (€1.50 to €5.50) which carries no reduction of any kind, allows no intermediate stops and refuses bicycles. The traghetto is the car ferry, and it runs between Cadenabbia, Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna and nowhere else.

Como is not on it, which is why you cannot put a car across the lake from the city.

• Villa Carlotta has its own landing stage, "Tremezzo – Villa Carlotta", 400 metres from the entrance, and the operator's timetable notes 450 metres on foot under the Tremezzo porticoes from the Tremezzo pier.
• Villa del Balbianello is not boat-only. It is about 25 minutes on foot from Lenno, roughly a kilometre and partly uphill on gravel, or 45 minutes on the 2.5 km trekking route. The taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno is chargeable, is not run by the FAI, and the FAI publishes no fare for it.
• Isola Comacina is boat-only, and the island publishes no fare for reaching it either.
• The Cadenabbia ferry pier sits 900 metres along the lakefront from Villa Carlotta's entrance, and Villa Carlotta's own page still describes the centre-lake passenger call at Cadenabbia as "opening planned for July 2026" on a page read in September. Confirm the call before you route through it.
• Brunate has no pier and Laglio has no landing stage at all: Laglio appears nowhere in either the summer or the autumn 2026 timetable, while its neighbours Moltrasio and Brienno are stops.

Journey times, and the window the timetable is valid for

Journey times worth holding on to, all from the operator's autumn 2026 weekday sheet, valid 5 October to 1 November 2026: Bellagio to Varenna 15 minutes, Menaggio to Varenna 15 minutes, Cadenabbia to Bellagio 10 minutes, Cadenabbia to Varenna 30 minutes. Timetables turn over twice a year here, so a departure quoted anywhere without its validity window is a departure you should re-check. The Greenway del Lago is the anchor: 11.2 km in seven stages, three and a half hours, free, from Colonno to Cadenabbia along stretches of the Roman Strada Regina. The Orrido di Nesso is free with no ticket and no published hours, seen from Piazza Castello or from the Ponte della Civera. The park at Villa Olmo is free and open even while the villa behind it is closed for restoration.

The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio publishes no admission ticket, so the fourteen chapels and their 230 statues cost nothing to walk past, though you cannot drive to the sanctuary. Como's cathedral is free to enter for prayer, and the minor naves carry a free ticketless route for visitors who do not want the transept and the choir. And the Cernobbio and Bellagio lakefronts charge nothing, which is worth saying plainly because two of the villas on those shores charge a great deal.

How long a visit takes. Exactly three of the seventeen state it: Villa Serbelloni at about two hours, of which the first hour is uphill; Villa del Balbianello at about 50 minutes for the interior tour, plus about 25 minutes for the Dosso di Lavedo trail; and the Greenway at three and a half hours. Villa Carlotta, Villa Monastero, Villa Melzi, Villa Olmo, the Castello di Vezio, the Orrido di Bellano, the Orrido di Nesso, the Sacro Monte, the cathedral and the Tempio Voltiano all state nothing. Any "allow two hours" you read elsewhere is somebody's estimate, not a published figure.

The walk from the pier. Only Villa Carlotta publishes one, and even that is a distance rather than a time: 400 metres from the Tremezzo–Villa Carlotta landing stage. Bellagio pier to Villa Melzi, Varenna pier to Villa Monastero, Varenna to the Castello di Vezio: not stated by anyone.

Two ticket prices that are said to exist and never printed. Como cathedral's own ticket page states that a cumulative ticket including the civic museums exists, and publishes no price for it. The Tempio Voltiano's pages describe a "CoMmUnity" annual card covering the Pinacoteca, the Tempio and the cathedral, and publish no price for that either. Both are sold from museicomo.vivaticket.it, and both would have to be priced at the desk.

The bus number to the western shore. Villa Carlotta's own page calls the Como–Menaggio–Colico line C110; the Greenway's official site calls it C10. ASF Autolinee, which runs it, renumbered its lines and publishes the timetable as C110, so that is the number used on this site, with the disagreement recorded here rather than quietly resolved. Getting around has the fare bands.

Villa Melzi's season and Villa Serbelloni's. Melzi publishes no opening or closing date at all, only "open daily 10:00–19:00". Serbelloni's own operator page, read in September, still says "Opening periods: date to be determined – March 2026". Both gardens are shown as seasonal by every third-party list; neither venue says so. The villas hub sets both out beside the six that do publish a season.

Children

Villa Melzi is free to under-11s, Villa Monastero to under-14s, the Villa Serbelloni tour to under-7s, and Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, the cathedral, the Tempio Voltiano and Isola Comacina all admit under-5s or under-6s free. Villa Carlotta charges $8.16 (€7) from 6 to 18 and $13.98 (€12) from 19 to 25, and sells a family ticket at $40.80 (€35) for two adults and two children. On the boats, children under 4 travel free if they do not take a seat, one adult may accompany a maximum of three of them, and 4 to 11 pays the child column. Lake Como with kids puts the rest together.

Wheelchairs, strollers and reduced mobility

The Orrido di Bellano is the flat refusal: stairs and narrow passages mean strollers and wheelchairs are not admitted, and the venue says so itself. The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio describes disabled access as difficult, with steps, cobbles and unsurfaced sections, and badge holders can arrange to drive up with the rector on +39 0344 55211. Villa del Balbianello is partially accessible, with a lift serving three of the villa's six levels, accessible restrooms in the Segrè Loggia and by the dock, and free admission for a disabled visitor and a companion, though a ticket is still issued for both.

Villa Monastero's garden is accessible as far as the citrus grove, and its lift was published as out of service until 9 June 2026, a date now passed and worth confirming. Villa Olmo is "partially accessible". Villa Carlotta states nothing beyond a recommendation to wear comfortable shoes. The accessibility page collects the boats and the trains.
