Menaggio, Italy

The battello, the ordinary line ship, calls here as a scheduled stop on the Como to Colico route. The servizio rapido, the fast hydrofoil and catamaran service, also calls: on the autumn 2026 sheet run SR102 leaves Como at 07:33 and reaches Menaggio at 08:08, which is the earliest fast arrival of the day. The traghetto, the car ferry, uses Menaggio as one of its four ports, the others being Cadenabbia, Bellagio and Varenna.

What the operator does not publish is a street address for the landing stage. There is no postal address for the imbarcadero in any timetable or fare document, which matters only if you are trying to give a taxi driver a destination. Fares work by stretch rather than by route: every pair of piers is assigned a number from 1 to 8 on the operator's chart, and the number is looked up in one table. Menaggio to Bellagio and Menaggio to Varenna are both stretch 3, so a one-day pass for that stretch, $20.40 (€17.50), buys unlimited movement around the triangle including intermediate stops. Menaggio to Como is stretch 6, $13.98 (€12) one way. Buying on board at a pier whose ticket office is open costs a fixed €1 extra per passenger, per bag and per vehicle.

Taking a car across

The vehicle tariff in force from 1 April 2026 applies between Cadenabbia, Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna, and nowhere else on the lake. A car up to 3.50 m costs $5.36 (€4.60) as a vehicle only, or $11.77 (€10.10) with its driver, and the vehicle-only price applies only if the driver already holds another valid individual ticket. A camper is $21.60 (€18.50) with driver, a motorbike up to 250 cc is $8.86 (€7.60), and a bicycle with its rider is $7.81 (€6.70). Passengers riding inside the car pay the passenger fare of stretch 3.

Two limits are live. A notice of 11 December 2024 caps vehicles at 40 tonnes gross and four metres in height, with the captain entitled to demand a weighbridge certificate. A notice of 6 August 2026, still in force at this check, cuts that to ten tonnes because of low water levels. An oversize surcharge of €3.30 applies per indivisible metre beyond the first, with the first excess metre free.

Line C110 is the trunk service along the SS340 Regina: Como to Argegno to Menaggio to Colico, calling at Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Laglio, Brienno, Argegno, Colonno, Sala Comacina, Ossuccio for the island, Lenno, Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, Menaggio, then the upper lake through Rezzonico, Cremia, Pianello, Musso, Dongo, Gravedona, Domaso, Sorico and Dubino to Colico Stazione. On the winter weekday sheet valid 14 September 2026 to 8 June 2027, the 05:20 from Como's Autostazione reaches Menaggio Piazza Roma at 06:26, so 66 minutes, having passed Cadenabbia at 06:21 and Argegno at 05:57. The operator publishes a run-by-run timetable and states no headway, so count the departures off the sheet rather than trusting an interval.

The line number is not optional: ASF renumbered to three digits, so C110 is the line and C10 will match nothing on the operator's site. Two official pages disagree about this and the operator's own villa partners still print the old form.

Line C112 runs Menaggio to Porlezza to Lugano, across the Swiss border, and ASF publishes a separate Lugano band table for it. No route fare is published for that service, so this page prints none.

The ticket counter, and where the buses do not go

The ticket counter is the reason to plan around this town. ASF runs exactly two staffed ticket offices on its whole network, one at Como's Autostazione and one here: Monday to Saturday 06:00 to 20:00, Sundays and holidays 07:00 to 10:15 and 15:00 to 17:30, with an URP desk on weekdays 08:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:30. The self-service machines here and at Como sell a short list only: the rete urbana single at €1.50, the Area Urbana single at €2, the rete urbana day ticket at €3.60, two carnets, the Como to Chiasso international single at €2 and the extraurban day ticket at €11.50.

A note on where the buses stop and where they do not. ASF's network is the Como province, so nothing runs down the eastern shore: Varenna is reached by train or boat and by no bus at all. On the Lecco side the operator is Lecco Trasporti, whose lakeside line stops short of Varenna at Olcio. Tapping without validating is the expensive mistake: a red light and an error message on the validator means you are travelling without a ticket, and the sanction sits under article 46 of Lombardy regional law 6/2012, in force since 1 January 2025. The regolamento was approved by Consiglio Comunale deliberation no. 14 of 29 April 2021. The zone covers Via Caronti, Via Leone Leoni from the Via Como junction to number 20, Via Como from the Via Caronti junction to number 26, and Via Castellino da Castello. Article 3 sets the hours a permit is required: Monday to Saturday 00:00 to 10:00, 12:00 to 16:00 and 18:00 to 24:00, and on holidays 00:00 to 16:00 and 18:00 to 24:00.

Read that shape carefully, because it is the opposite of what most visitors expect. On a weekday the zone is open in the middle of the day, from ten until noon and again from four until six. On a public holiday it is closed all morning and reopens only between four and six. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, mopeds and motorcycles are banned inside it altogether except for emergency and utility vehicles, and the speed limit throughout is 30 km/h.

Permits are of two kinds and both are free: permanent, for up to five years, and temporary, from one day to three months. A retrospective regularisation is possible no later than three days after a first entry, which is a generous rule by the standards of this lake. If your accommodation is inside the zone, article 6 authorises your vehicle in to load and unload luggage, and requires the operator to send the list of its guests' plates to the municipal office daily.

The fine is the fact nobody else on this lake publishes. Article 9 applies the national highway code penalties to the driving offence itself, whose euro figure is not stated, and then adds that conduct the code does not cover, such as failing to display a permit or failing to notify an entry in time, is punished with a fine of €25 to €500 under article 7-bis of Legislative Decree 267/2000.

Parking, and what is not published

For visitors, nothing. The only parking tariff the comune publishes is a residents' tagliando at €30 a year, valid in the designated residents' areas of Largo Fossato and Via per la Grona, applied for by appointment at the Polizia Locale with proof of a bank transfer. The only other parking act on the books, Delibera G.C. n. 184 of 15 December 2006, governs the town-hall car park and reserves it for councillors and staff on weekdays from 06:00 to 18:00.

So there is no hourly rate, no daily rate, no blue-zone tariff, no park-and-ride price and no concessionaire page. That is the same answer Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzina give; the only two comuni on this lake that publish a parking price are Como and Lecco. The wider comparison is on driving and parking.

At the head of that list is Villa Vigoni, in the hamlet of Loveno above the town, which the comune describes as the seat that promotes Italian and German relations in a European and international perspective, in the fields of science, education and culture. It is a study and conference centre rather than a house museum, and neither the comune nor this page publishes visiting hours or an admission price for it.

The rest of the comune's list: the Parco Val Sanagra, a protected local park established by provincial deliberation n. 183/27914 of 30 June 2005, running up the valley behind the town; the Linea Cadorna at Crocetta, fortifications built in 1916 and 1917 with the small church of San Maurizio beside them; the Lido Giardino; the golf course; the Antica Strada Regina, the historic road along the shore; and the Chiesa di Santo Stefano.

What that list makes clear is the shape of a day here. Menaggio is a walking and cycling base with a valley behind it and a first world war defensive line in the hills, rather than a village of ticketed villas. The garden estates are across the water and one pier south: Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo and Villa del Balbianello at Lenno, both a short hop on the C110 bus or the boat, and Villa Melzi fifteen minutes away at Bellagio.

The Infopoint, and who runs it

The Infopoint Turistico di Menaggio is at Piazza Garibaldi 3, on +39 0344 32924 and turismo@menaggio.com, open daily 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, reopening on 1 March for the 2026 season. It is operated by Promo Menaggio ETS, an association, and not by the comune, which publishes no tourist-office entry of its own; the comune's homepage links out to the association's site under the heading of tourist site. That distinction is worth holding on to when you read anything about this town: the promotional site and the institutional site are different publishers, and the figures on this page come from the second one.

Swimming, and an unresolved lido

The comune names a Lido Giardino among its places of interest. What is not resolved is whether the town's lido still operates under that name: lidodimenaggio.eu does not resolve at all, and search results report that the site was taken over by a hotel and reopened as a beach club selling per-setup day rates in July 2024. None of that was verified on an operator's own site or on any comune page at this check, so the season, the hours and the price are all not stated here.

The water is monitored by ATS Insubria, the health authority for this shore, from April to September, with results published on the Ministry of Health's Portale Acque. ARPA Lombardia does not run bathing assessments in this region, whatever a page tells you, and a ban is issued by the comune, by mayoral ordinance, on the ATS's advice. Eating: a negative finding

Naming a restaurant on this site requires a citable list, meaning Slow Food, Michelin or Gambero Rosso, or the venue's own site, with the source and its year printed beside the name. For Menaggio we hold neither at this check, so this page names none.

The cover charge is the one thing worth knowing in advance and the one thing nobody regulates: Italian law requires the coperto to be shown on the menu, but no comune here, no regional act and no trade body publishes a rate or a ceiling for it. It suits you if

You want the centre of the lake without paying centre-of-the-lake prices for movement. From here the ferry reaches Bellagio and Varenna in fifteen minutes on a $6.41 (€5.50) ticket, the C110 bus runs the whole western shore from Como to Colico past every villa worth stopping at, and the staffed ticket counter is open from six in the morning. If you are travelling with a car, this is one of the four piers that will take it across, and the ZTL is open in the middle of a weekday rather than closed.

It also suits walkers and cyclists better than the villages do: a protected valley park behind the town, a first world war defensive line in the hills above it, a golf course and the old shore road. And it suits a budget: a one-star hotel or residence is taxed at €1 a night here, the lowest hotel rate on this shore.

It does not suit you if

You came for ticketed villas and gardens. The comune's own register names a study centre, a park, a fortification line and two churches; the famous estates are across the water or one pier south, which is a bus ride or a boat ride rather than a walk. Nor does it suit anyone who needs to price a car day in advance: no parking tariff is published for visitors at all, only a €30 residents' annual permit.

It is also a seasonal town in a way the numbers show plainly. The Infopoint reopens on 1 March for the season, the tourist tax runs only to 30 November, and the boat timetable thins across the winter. About 3,000 people live here at the ISTAT count for 1 January 2025, and out of season that is what the town feels like.
