There is no bus

ASF Autolinee runs the Como province network, which means the western shore and the Como to Bellagio road; its network stops at the provincial boundary and no ASF line reaches the eastern shore at all. On the Lecco side the operator is Lecco Trasporti, whose lakeside line D120 runs Lecco to Abbadia to Mandello to Olcio and stops short of Varenna, while the Lecco to Bellagio line D110 runs the far shore of the Lecco branch through Onno and Limonta. The line numbers D10 and D20 that circulate do not exist.

So Varenna is reached by train or by boat, and that is the fact to plan around. It is also why the walk down from the station to the pier is the connection every Bellagio day trip out of Milan actually depends on.

The train from Milan

The station is Varenna-Esino-Perledo, on the Milano to Lecco to Sondrio to Tirano line, run by Trenord. It sits above the village, and the walk down to the water is the journey's last leg. Fares are a kilometre-band table rather than a route price list, in force from 1 September 2026, and Trenord's own route pages still print the previous revision, which is why the figures below are read off the tariff sheet instead.

About 16 trains a day run the Varenna route, roughly one an hour, with the first from Milano Centrale at 06:20 and the last at 21:20; from Varenna-Esino the first is 05:35 and the last 21:35. Over-65s pay 20 per cent less, which on this band is €6.20. A ticket must be validated before boarding, and buying on board is allowed only if you go to the inspection staff at once.

One combined product exists and it is narrow. Trenitalia sells a lake pass alongside a Trenitalia ticket to Como San Giovanni, valid until 30 September 2026 and usable within three days of the rail date: the Como to Varenna day version is $27.50 (€23.60) for an adult and $17.24 (€14.80) for a child aged 4 to 14. It is bought only on trenitalia.com, it covers ordinary boat runs with the fast-service supplement still payable at the pier, and it excludes every Trenord service in Lombardy, which is most of what actually runs to this lake. Read the exclusion twice before buying it.

Three services, two berths

All three services touch here. The battello, the ordinary line ship, calls on the Como to Colico route and again on the Lecco to Bellagio line. The servizio rapido, the fast hydrofoil and catamaran service, calls on the Como to Colico route only, and it is never a fare of its own: you pay the ordinary fare for your stretch plus a fixed supplement, and that supplement carries no reduction for anybody, not children, not over-65s, not certified disabled passengers. Fast tickets are valid on the day of issue only and allow no intermediate stops, and they carry no bicycles. The traghetto, the car ferry, runs Cadenabbia to Bellagio to Menaggio to Varenna, which is the whole of the vehicle network on this lake.

Crossing times published by the operator: Varenna to Bellagio and Varenna to Menaggio 15 minutes, with some runs at 30, and Cadenabbia to Varenna 30 minutes. On the autumn weekday sheet valid 5 October to 1 November 2026, the first ferry from Menaggio to Varenna is 06:20 and the last 20:10, while Bellagio to Varenna runs 06:05 to 22:00.

What the chart does not print

The last row is deliberate. The operator's Complete Chart of Stretch is a port-by-port matrix and the rows this page prints are the ones read directly off it; Varenna to Colico is not among them, so no figure is invented here. Ask at the ticket office or use the operator's own fare lookup, which produces the band for any named pair.

Two standing rules cost people money. Buying on board at a pier whose ticket office is open adds a fixed €1 per passenger, per bag and per vehicle. And a day pass is issued for the stretch you name, so a pass bought for the Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio triangle, $20.40 (€17.50), does not carry you to Como. The zone is governed by a disciplinare approved by Giunta Comunale deliberation no. 133 of 9 November 2021 and amended by no. 117 of 30 December 2022 and no. 102 of 24 December 2024. It has one gate, in Piazza San Giorgio, and it covers Piazza San Giorgio, Piazzetta Brenta, Contrada del Prato, Piazza San Giovanni, Via San Giovanni and Contrada della Filanda. Article 10 puts it beyond argument: the zone is permanent, from 00:00 to 24:00, active seven days a week, holidays included.

Green and red permit holders may enter at any hour. Yellow permits, for tradesmen, work Monday to Saturday 07:00 to 19:00 for a maximum of 30 minutes. Suppliers load and unload Monday to Saturday 06:00 to 10:00 and on holidays 07:00 to 09:00. Taxis and hire cars with driver may enter without a permit for a maximum of 30 minutes.

If you have booked a room inside the zone

Article 7 puts the duty on the property, not on you: the accommodation must enter its guests' plates in the database at the time of booking, for the whole stay, through its own account. Where a plate could not be pre-registered, entry is allowed provided the plate is entered within 24 hours. A guest without a red tag may still enter on proof of the booking, and where the property has no private parking the permit covers loading luggage for a maximum of 30 minutes. Red tags are issued one per authorised hotel room, and for other accommodation one for up to four beds and two above four.

The permit prices the comune publishes are for residents and businesses rather than visitors, and they are worth seeing because they are the only euro figures Varenna prints for driving at all: green annual permit free for residents inside the zone and €10 for tenants, non-resident owners and business owners; red annual permit for hotels and accommodation €30; yellow annual permit for suppliers and tradesmen €80, or €5 for a day. Applications for the 2026 year ran from 19 December 2025 to 17 January 2026.

Parking, and the figures that do not exist

For visitors, nothing is published. Searches of the comune's own site for sosta and parcheggio return the resident parking permit service, a residents' form for Olivedo and Fiumelatte, the disabled badge, and a standing ban on parking campervans and caravans dated 8 January 2024. There is no hourly rate, no daily rate, no blue-zone tariff and no park-and-ride price. The domain parkvarenna.it does not resolve.

The one figure attached to the paperwork is the €16 revenue stamp on a permit application, and the comune states only that the fee varies with the type of permit, the vehicle and, where relevant, the applicant's means-tested ISEE band, paid through PagoPA. No euro amount is published for a plain ZTL violation either: the disciplinare refers to the penalties of the national highway code, and three breaches of the access hours within 30 days costs a red or yellow holder the permit for the year. Polizia Locale is on +39 0341 830119 extension 3, with a desk on Wednesdays 09:00 to 12:00.

The practical answer for a driver is the ferry. Leave the car where you can price it, cross as a foot passenger for $6.41 (€5.50), and read driving and parking around the lake before you commit to a car at all.

The two that need a ticket

Villa Monastero, at Viale Giovanni Polvani 4, is the village's principal sight: owned by the Provincia di Lecco, it is a house museum, an internationally used conference centre and a botanical garden that runs for almost two kilometres along the shore. Hours and the four separate ticket ladders, including the combined tickets with Villa Cipressi and with the Monastero del Lavello, are on the Villa Monastero page.

Castello di Vezio stands on the ridge above, with month-by-month hours that include weekend evening openings to 22:30 in summer, no booking needed and dogs allowed on a leash. The falconry that most guides still list was permanently discontinued after the vandalism of October 2022; it is gone. Villa Cipressi, next door to Villa Monastero, sells its gardens separately; the listed entry is $23.27 and is the third card here. No walking time from the pier is published by any of the three, which is a small thing until you are timing a boat.

The village itself

The lakefront walkway that links the Olivedo pier end of the village to the older centre, the stepped contrade that climb away from it, Piazza San Giorgio with the church at the top, and the harbour below: that is the whole of Varenna, and an hour walks it comfortably. The comune publishes no visitor route, no numbered walk and no walking times, so anything you read that gives a minute count for the promenade is somebody's estimate.

The InfoPoint is run as Varenna Turismo, in the Regione Lombardia network with the comune's own tourism department behind it. It has no published street address, only a map pin, but it does publish a phone number, +39 350 157 3202, and infopoint@varennaturismo.com. Hours move sharply with the season: daily 09:30 to 17:30 from June to September; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 09:30 to 13:30 and 14:00 to 16:30 with weekends 10:00 to 17:00 and closed Tuesdays in March to May and again in October; and in January, February and November open only on a list of named dates, 10:00 to 16:00. December is not stated at all. It holds left luggage during opening hours, which is the single most useful service in a village where the station is above the town, and it doubles as the ticket desk for the Museo Ornitologico L. Scanagatta upstairs.

Water taxis: what is published, and what is not

One Varenna operator publishes a price list, and it is for tours rather than transfers. Taxi Boat Varenna lists a one-hour Classic Group Tour from $69.90 (€60), which its tour page states as per person, departing from Dock 2 in Riva Grande on a Venetian water taxi carrying twelve, with a larger boat for up to thirty; a two-and-a-half-hour central-lake run taking in Villa del Balbianello from $104.90 (€90); and private, sunset and winter tours from $349.60 (€300).

The transfer page carries no price at all, only an invitation to email for a tailored offer and the observation that the crossing takes ten minutes rather than driving round the lake. Nobody on Lake Como publishes a point-to-point water-taxi tariff, and no comune or authority regulates or caps one, so treat every quoted transfer figure as a negotiation rather than a rate. The alternative with a published price is the public boat: $6.41 (€5.50) to Bellagio or Menaggio.

There is a beach at Via Lido 4 with sunbeds, deckchairs, changing rooms, showers and a dock for clients, and an adjacent bar and restaurant. That description comes from a tourism listing rather than from the comune or from the operator, and the candidate operator's own site, olivedolido.it, was not confirmed at this check. So: no season, no hours, no admission and no sunbed price for Varenna is published anywhere this page will stand behind. If the lido matters to your day, telephone before you travel.

The water itself is monitored, and by the health service rather than the environment agency. The Lecco shore, which includes Varenna, sits with ATS Brianza, which samples every two weeks through the May to September bathing season and sends its results to the Ministry of Health for publication on the Portale Acque at portaleacque.salute.gov.it. A bathing ban is issued by the comune, by mayoral ordinance, on the ATS's advice, and signposted on the spot. Any page crediting ARPA Lombardia with Lake Como bathing data has the wrong authority.

No comune on this lake publishes a list of free, no-admission public beaches, so this page publishes none either. The lake-wide picture is on swimming and beaches.

Naming a restaurant here requires a citable list, meaning Slow Food, Michelin or Gambero Rosso, or the venue's own site, with the source and its year printed beside the name. For Varenna we hold neither at this check, so this page names none. The names that circulate are the same handful copied between blogs, in a village of 646 residents where turnover is real.

What is worth knowing is the cover charge. Italian law requires the coperto to appear on the menu, but the amount is the restaurant's own, and no comune, no Regione Lombardia act and no trade body publishes a rate or a ceiling for this lake. There is no such thing as the standard Lake Como coperto; read the menu.

The kitchens are concentrated on the lakefront walkway and around Piazza San Giorgio, and the InfoPoint keeps the current list. Bookable food and wine experiences across the lake are on where to eat around Lake Como.

It suits you if

You are arriving by train and want to stop travelling. Varenna is the only village on the lake where you step off a Milan train and walk down to a pier, at $8.97 (€7.70) for the rail leg, and from that pier the 15-minute crossings put Bellagio and Menaggio inside a stretch-3 ticket. It suits a short stay especially well: a day pass for that triangle, $20.40 (€17.50), covers unlimited movement between the piers it names, intermediate stops included.

It suits anyone who wants the sights to be close together. Two ticketed gardens and a castle stand within a short climb of the water, the village walks in an hour, and the left-luggage desk at the InfoPoint solves the awkward gap between a checkout and a late train.

It does not suit you if

You are driving. The restricted zone is permanent, around the clock, seven days a week, no parking price is published for visitors, and the paperwork that would let you in runs through your accommodation rather than through you. It also does not suit anyone who wants a town: 646 residents means a handful of shops, a seasonal InfoPoint that in January opens on seven named days, and very little open out of season.

And it does not suit a winter stay on price. Varenna charges its tourist tax in all twelve months, where the comune across the water charges none between 1 December and the end of February. Over a week in January for two people in a three-star room, that is the difference between €42 and nothing. The trade-offs are in the base table, and the argument in full is Bellagio or Varenna.
