Lake Como Tours, Priced Against The Gate And The Timetable

The pattern on this lake is unusual: transport is cheap and well run, gates are moderately priced and easy to buy, and what a tour really sells is the removal of connections. Judge every listing by how many changes it saves you.

The one we would book

If you are staying on the lake and can read a timetable, book nothing and buy a day pass. If you are coming from Milan for one day, book the full-day tour with a cruise at $73.87: the do-it-yourself version of that day costs about the same once the train and the day pass are added, and it hands back the three hours you would spend working out connections.

Buy at the gate wherever the tour price and the gate price match: you keep the flexibility and lose nothing. Book ahead only where the venue itself demands it, which on this lake means Villa del Balbianello, where booking is compulsory, and the Villa Serbelloni park, which runs guided visits at 11:00 and 15:30 for a maximum of thirty people.

Three things the gate does that a reseller cannot

Villa Carlotta discounts at its own desk for holders of a Lombardy museum subscription, a FAI, ICOM or Touring card, and for anyone showing a same-day ASF bus or Trenord train ticket to the villa. Villa Melzi lets children up to 11 in free and sells a two-day ticket at $16.31 (€14.00) that no platform lists. The Orrido di Bellano charges $5.83 (€5.00) instead of $9.32 (€8.00) to anyone holding a train or Navigazione Laghi ticket.

None of those reductions survives a third-party booking.

A Milan day tour is a coach to Como or Varenna, a scheduled or chartered boat leg, free time in Bellagio and usually one more stop, then the coach back. Ten to eleven hours door to door, of which two and a half are on the motorway. The strongest argument for one is not the price, it is that a coach parks where a train does not: it can drop you in Bellagio, which no railway reaches at all.

On the train the arithmetic is close. Milano Cadorna to Como Lago is 46 km, about 60 minutes, $6.29 (€5.40) on the kilometre-band table in force from 1 September 2026, with roughly 34 services a day; Como Lago station is a few minutes from the piers. Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino-Perledo is 72 km, about 64 minutes direct, $8.97 (€7.70), roughly 16 trains a day. Add a Como–Varenna day pass at $34.40 (€29.50) or the centre-lake triangle at $20.40 (€17.50) and a self-run day lands between $27 and $47 per person, against $73.87 for the guided coach day.

One trap worth knowing: Trenord's own route pages still print older fares than the table in force, and Milano Cadorna is not Milano Centrale, although one Trenord page calls the Como Lago line “the distance between Como lake and Milan Central”. The line terminates at Cadorna. Milan to Lake Como sets out both stations and the timings.

Two bus lines carry almost every visitor who does not take the boat. C110 runs Como to Argegno, Menaggio and Colico along the SS340: the winter weekday sheet has Como Stazione Autolinee at 05:20 reaching Menaggio at 06:26, which is 66 minutes, and Argegno in 37. C130 runs the eastern shore road to Bellagio: Como San Giovanni 06:20 to Bellagio 07:29, 69 minutes, roughly hourly through the middle of the day. Note the numbers: ASF's lake lines are C110 and C130, not the C10 and C30 that circulate widely, including on one official villa page.

Fares are a band system, 1 to 12, and ASF publishes the band table but not a band for a named route, so the price for your journey comes out of the machine or the ticket office rather than off a page. The bands run $1.98 (€1.70) to $9.55 (€8.20) for a single, with the on-board price a euro or more higher on every band and ten-trip carnets sold online only. Inside Como the urban single is $1.75 (€1.50) for 75 minutes, the wider Area Urbana single $2.33 (€2.00) for 90, and the urban day ticket $4.19 (€3.60). There are exactly two staffed ticket offices on the whole network, in Como and Menaggio.

There is no lakeside bus along the east shore to Varenna. That side is the railway's, on the Milano–Lecco–Tirano line, and it is why Varenna is the easy base for anyone arriving by train and Bellagio is not.

The one pass that covers a mixed day is Io Viaggio Ovunque in Lombardia: $21.00 (€18.00) for a day, $35.00 (€30.00) for two, $41.40 (€35.50) for three, $55.30 (€47.50) for a week, covering regional trains, urban and interurban buses and the Como–Brunate funicular. It does not cover the boats. Regione Lombardia lists only Lake Iseo's boats as included, and the Lake Como operator is a separate state company. Treat the boat as always extra.

Almost every tour here has a public-transport shadow, and it is worth knowing which one before you start hunting for another operator.

If a villa bundle is sold out, buy the gate ticket and make your own way: Villa Carlotta is 400 metres from its own landing stage, the only villa on the lake that publishes a walking distance from a pier. If a Bellagio boat trip is full, take the car ferry as a foot passenger from Varenna or Menaggio at $6.41 (€5.50) a leg: the crossing is 15 minutes and runs to 22:00 on the autumn weekday sheet. If a Milan coach day is gone, the train and a day pass reproduce it, as the arithmetic above shows.

What has no substitute: the guided interior of Villa del Balbianello, the Villa Serbelloni park, which can only be seen on the 11:00 or 15:30 guided visit with a maximum of thirty people, and any winery. Book those first and build the rest of the day around them.

And if the whole week is booked out, move the trip rather than the plan: the lake's quiet fortnight is early October, when the boats still run the summer pattern until 4 October and the villas are still open.
