Orrido di Bellano

1.5 million years of water

The gorge was cut about 1.5 million years ago by the Pioverna torrent and by the Adda glacier working the same weakness in the rock. What that produced is a slot in the mountainside, narrow, high and permanently wet, with the torrent running along the bottom of it and daylight arriving in a strip overhead.

You walk it on a system of walkways anchored to the sheer walls rather than laid on the floor of the gorge, which is what makes the experience different from a riverside path. The water is below you, close enough to feel, and the rock is at arm's reach on both sides. The walkway system has recently been extended up to the highest waterfall, so the route now goes further into the gorge than older photographs of it show. In the evening the gorge is lit.

Why rain improves it

Almost everything on this lake is diminished by weather. A gorge is the exception: more water in the Pioverna means more noise, more spray and more of the effect the walkways were built to deliver. The surface gets slippery and the light gets darker, both of which are part of the point.

That makes the Orrido the obvious substitute on the days when Castello di Vezio up the shore closes because it is raining, which it does through November and every winter weekend. What it is not

It is not a hike, and it is not long. It is a walkway circuit through a gorge that takes most people well under an hour, and the venue publishes no visit length at all. Anyone expecting a canyon trail will find it short; anyone expecting a viewing platform will find it more involving than they thought.

It is also not the same thing as the Orrido di Nesso, which is on the other side of the lake at Nesso, is free, has no ticket and no published opening hours, and is looked at from a bridge rather than walked into. That one is covered on the Nesso page, and confusing the two is the most common mistake in Lake Como planning that involves the word orrido.

Note the weekday and weekend split on every combined ticket: the same bundle costs half as much again at a weekend, on a public holiday or at any time in August. The Orrido on its own is priced the same every day of the year.

The transport discount, in detail

A ticket for the train or for the Navigazione Laghi boat brings the Orrido entry down to $5.83 (€5) from $9.32 (€8). It is not framed as a promotion and it has no expiry printed against it; it sits in the venue's price list as a category alongside children and Touring Club members.

The reason it matters more here than a discount usually would is that Bellano is a place most visitors reach by exactly those two means. The railway on the eastern shore runs through the town, and the scheduled boats call at its pier. If you came by either, you are already holding the thing that saves you $3.49, and the mistake is throwing it away or leaving it in the hotel. Keep it in a pocket, not in a bag you check.

Touring Club Italiano members pay $6.99 (€6). Groups of fifteen or more pay $8.16 (€7) each with one leader free per fifteen, and must book. School groups of children aged 6 to 14 pay $5.83 (€5) a pupil with accompanying teachers free. Children aged 0 to 5, residents of the Comune di Bellano and Disability Card holders with a companion go free.

Until 27 September the gorge is open every day from 09:00 to 19:00. From 28 September to 24 October it runs Monday to Friday 09:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 19:00. From 25 October it runs Monday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 17:00. Last admission is always 20 minutes before closing.

What happens after that is not published. The table simply runs on from 25 October with no closing date and no winter shutdown stated. The venue separately runs an Orrido Magic Christmas Lights edition in December, and archive pages for the 2021 to 2024 editions are online, with no page yet for a 2026 edition. So the honest position is this: the gorge appears to stay open through the winter on the shorter hours, a Christmas edition has run in each of the last several years, and the Comune di Bellano publishes nothing that confirms either for the coming winter.

Booking is required for groups over fifteen, for school groups and for guided visits. Nothing needs booking for an individual, and the ticket desk at the gate sells on the day.

Ca' del Diavol, the devil's house, is a three-storey pentagonal tower standing at the entrance to the Orrido. Inside it is a multimedia route on the history of the Bellano area. Adding it to the gorge costs $2.33 more on a weekday outside August and $8.16 more at a weekend, on a holiday or in August, which is a large spread for one small building and the reason to decide before you reach the desk rather than at it.

San Nicolao and the Museo Giancarlo Vitali are elsewhere in the town, and they are what the $13.98 (€12) and the $17.48 (€15) and $23.30 (€20) combinations buy. Vitali was a painter from Bellano, and the museum in his name is the town's own cultural institution rather than a lake attraction.

The dog rules differ site by site, and this is the detail that catches people out. Dogs of any size are allowed in the Orrido itself. Dogs are not allowed in Ca' del Diavol at all. Small dogs in a carrier or a bag are allowed in San Nicolao and in the Museo Giancarlo Vitali. So a visitor with a large dog can buy the gorge and cannot use the combined ticket, whatever the desk sells them.

The venue is run by the Comune di Bellano at Via Vittorio Veneto 23, and it publishes no walking time from the railway station or from the ferry pier. Both are in the town and the gorge is signposted from the lakefront; treat any figure you read as an estimate, ours included, because the venue states none.

The transport ticket matters twice over. First, it is how you get here without driving a lake road that is narrow, busy and short of parking. Second, it is what brings the entry down to $5.83 (€5) at the desk. Nothing else on this lake rewards arriving by public transport with a discount at the gate.

By boat, the scheduled Navigazione Lago di Como services call at Bellano on the eastern shore run. Which service that is matters: the battello calls at everything and is slow, the servizio rapido is faster and carries a supplement payable on top of the fare, and the car ferry is a different animal entirely that runs only between Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio and does not come here. By train, the eastern-shore line from Milan through Lecco to Sondrio and Tirano runs along this side of the lake and stops in the town, which makes the Orrido one of the few attractions on Lake Como that a visitor based in Milan can reach without a boat at all. The walkways are the whole of the Orrido, and they are not long. What changes the length of the visit is whether you buy the tower, how many people are on the walkway in front of you and how long you stand at the highest waterfall.

Treat it as the wet-weather half of an eastern-shore day, and as the reason to keep your train ticket. The pattern that works: the morning at Castello di Vezio if the sky is clear, lunch in Varenna, then one stop north to the gorge in the afternoon. Reverse it when it rains, because the castle will very likely be shut and the gorge will be at its best.
