Lake Como on a Rainy Day

The trap is Castello di Vezio, the ruined castle on the promontory above Varenna. Its own timetable states that in November it opens Monday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 and closes if it rains, and that from December through February it opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in fair weather only. It is the single most weather-dependent paid attraction on the lake and almost nothing written about it says so.

While we are correcting the record: the falconry display that still headlines most write-ups of Vezio was permanently discontinued after vandalism in October 2022.

Two other closures are not about rain at all but will catch you the same way. Villa Olmo in Como is closed for a restoration with no reopening date published, although its park remains open. And Villa Carlotta's published 2026 calendar ends on 8 December with no 2027 reopening date, which matters if your wet week falls in winter. The villas page carries every season.

The Orrido di Bellano is the paid one and the better organised. The gorge was cut roughly 1.5 million years ago by the Pioverna torrent and the Adda glacier, and it is walked on walkways anchored to the sheer walls, recently extended up to the highest waterfall and lit in the evening. At the entrance stands the Ca' del Diavol, a three-storey pentagonal tower holding a multimedia route on the history of the Bellano area, which is the indoor half of the visit.

The access rule that decides a family day

The venue is unusually direct about it: the route is simple and suits everyone, but there are stairs and narrow passages, and for that reason strollers and wheelchairs are not allowed. Dogs of any size are allowed in the Orrido itself but not in the Ca' del Diavol, and small dogs in a carrier are allowed in San Nicolao and in the Giancarlo Vitali museum. Booking is required only for groups over 15, school groups and guided visits.

Hours run daily 09:00 to 19:00 until 27 September, then Monday to Friday 09:00 to 18:00 and weekends 09:00 to 19:00 until 24 October, then Monday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 and weekends 09:00 to 17:00 from 25 October, with last admission 20 minutes before closing. The table has no season end and no winter closure date at all.

The free one at Nesso

The Orrido di Nesso costs nothing. The Comune publishes it as accesso libero non a pagamento, with no ticket and no opening hours, and names the two viewpoints: Piazza Castello, and the medieval bridge known as the Ponte della Civera down on the shore. The fall descends about 200 metres from its head to the water, where the Tuf and the Nosè torrents meet, and Leonardo da Vinci recorded it in the Codex Atlanticus as a place where a river falls with great force through an enormous cleft in the mountain.

Two honest warnings. The descent to the bridge is a long stairway and the Comune publishes no step count and no walking time, so the widely repeated figure you will see elsewhere is not official. And the Comune has issued ordinances restricting diving and jumping from the bridge and closing a stretch of water to navigation in front of the gorge; the rule is real, the current text was not readable when we checked, and nobody should be in that water on a wet day anyway. The one to aim for is Villa Monastero in Varenna, because it is the only central-lake villa open in all twelve months and because the casa museo is a genuine house museum rather than an anteroom. Garden and house museum together cost $17.48 (€15), the garden alone $15.15 (€13), and children aged 0 to 14 go free. It closes on Tuesdays from February to October and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in November and December, and it sits on about two kilometres of shoreline.

The two that need a decision in advance

Villa del Balbianello is the most rewarding interior on the lake and the most rule-bound. The guided villa tour runs about 50 minutes in Italian or English, groups are capped at 16 people, online booking is compulsory, and the villa closes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Neither land route from Lenno suits a stroller or reduced mobility: the shorter is about a kilometre uphill and partly gravel, roughly 25 minutes, and the alternative is a 2.5-kilometre trekking route of about 45 minutes. A taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno exists, is not run by the estate, is chargeable and reservation-only, and no fare for it is published anywhere. On a wet day, assume you are walking. Villa Melzi is the opposite: $11.65 (€10) at the gate, no reservation, open daily 10:00 to 19:00 with last admission at 18:30, and the ticket includes the museum and the chapel. Dogs are allowed on a leash and may go into the museum and the chapel too, which is the most permissive rule we found on the lake. Picnics are prohibited and packed lunches are allowed only on benches or in the area under the museum near the restrooms, which on a wet day is exactly where you will want to be. Como Cathedral charges $6.99 (€6) for the ticketed visit, with $4.66 (€4) for over-65s, Como residents, university students and adult groups of 15 or more, $3.50 (€3) for children aged 6 to 18 and school groups, and a Como Family Pass at $17.48 (€15) for one family unit of up to two adults. Under-6s, disabled visitors with a companion, one teacher per 15 pupils and accredited journalists and guides go free. The ticket buys the transept, the wooden choir, the sacristies and the upper walkways.

The part worth knowing on a wet day is free. Entering the Duomo to pray costs nothing, and ticketless visitors have their own published route: in through the Porta delle Virtù along the right minor nave past the altar of Sant'Abbondio and the Pala Raimondi, under the organ lofts, into the left minor nave past the altars of the Deposition and of San Giuseppe, and out through the Porta della Rana. Photography is allowed for personal use except during Mass.

• Tourist visiting hours are Monday to Friday 10:30 to 17:30 and Saturday 10:45 to 16:30. The 2026 ticketing calendar suspends tourist visits on every Sunday and holy day of obligation, which contradicts an older page still showing Sunday slots; take the calendar.
• The upper walkways are not a wet-day option. Access is only with a licensed tour guide and a signed liability form, adults only with ID, no strollers or wheelchairs, not for anyone with claustrophobia, cardiac or joint problems or reduced mobility, and the route runs up steep narrow spiral staircases. No dedicated price is published for it.
• The Tempio Voltiano on the Como lakefront runs the same $6.99 (€6), $4.66 (€4), $3.50 (€3) and $17.48 (€15) ladder, opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 with last entry 17:30, and closes Mondays plus 1 January, 1 May, 15 August and 25 December. It is a single-room monument to Alessandro Volta, inaugurated on 16 July 1928, and it is entirely indoors.
• Three free days are published by the civic museums: International Museum Day on 18 May, the National Day of Families in Museums in October, and the city's patronal feast on 31 August.
• Villa Olmo's park is free and open, even though the villa is closed for restoration. A park is a poor wet-day idea, but it is free and it is there.

Both ticketed sites sell through one system, so a wet morning in Como is a cathedral and a museum for $13.98 (€12) a head, or one family pass covering both places if you buy the right product at the desk. ATM S.p.A. has operated the line since July 2005, under the Consorzio Mobilità Funicolare e Bus and not ASF Autolinee, although ASF sells a combined funicular and Como urban pass. The journey takes 7 minutes, with request stops at Como Alta and Carescione, and the lower station is at Piazza Alcide De Gasperi 4. Tickets are not timed.

Why three prices exist

Because the official website of the funicular is a derelict frameset with one current corner. Its news items stop in 2023 and its English timetable pages are actually the Brunate to Rifugio CAO bus schedule, still carrying a line about services on 25 December 2007, but its Tariffe panel holds the sheet in force, headed Tariffe dal 01/09/2026. ATM, which operates the line, still serves an undated tariff PDF with the €3.60 and €7.20 that sheet replaced, and it is also where the operating hours are published: every day 06:00 to 00:00, every 15 minutes from 06:00 to 07:00, every 12 minutes from 07:00 to 09:00 and every 15 minutes from 09:00 to midnight, with cars leaving Como and Brunate simultaneously. Take the dated sheet and expect the machine at the station to be the final word.

Two more things for a wet day. Brunate has no pier, so the funicular or the road are the only ways up. And a pushchair, a pet, a bicycle or any other parcel is carried for €3.60, with guide dogs free. If you hold an Io Viaggio Ovunque in Lombardia day pass, the funicular is covered by it. From the eastern shore, Varenna or Bellano. This is the better wet day, because the gorge and the house museum are both on this side and both are reached by train rather than by boat.

• Morning. Villa Monastero in Varenna. Garden and house museum $17.48 (€15), last entry 30 minutes before closing, no booking needed for individuals or families, and the day printed on an online ticket is binding while the time is not.
• Late morning. Train or boat north to Bellano. Show the ticket at the Orrido and the entry drops to $5.83 (€5).
• Midday. The Orrido itself, then the Ca' del Diavol tower for the indoor half. Remember: no strollers, no wheelchairs.
• Afternoon. Back to Varenna, where the San Nicolao and Giancarlo Vitali sites are on the combined ticket if the rain has not eased.
• Evening. Check the boat: the timetable changes four times a year and the winter edition was not yet published when we checked.

From the western shore or Como. The cheaper wet day, and the one with the most shelter per kilometre.

• Morning. Como Cathedral. The ticketed route is $6.99 (€6); the free ticketless route through the minor naves is genuinely worth walking and costs nothing. Tourist visits are suspended on Sundays and holy days of obligation in 2026.
• Late morning. The Tempio Voltiano on the lakefront, five minutes away and open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00.
• Midday. Look up. If Brunate at 689 metres is below the cloud base, take the funicular; if it is inside the cloud, do not.
• Afternoon. Boat or bus to Tremezzo for Villa Carlotta's museum rooms, checking the published 2026 calendar first because the villa opens only on listed dates.
• Evening. Como has the most indoor evening on the lake, and where to eat has the table customs. For a whole wet week, the guide to the lake is the place to rebuild the trip from.

Navigazione Lago di Como publishes no weather cancellation rule. What it does publish is a refund policy: a full refund if the departure was 60 or more minutes late or was cancelled, if the authorities barred you, or if there was no room, plus a voluntary cancellation refund within 30 minutes of the issuing time with up to €3.00 deducted. Ordinary tickets are valid all day, so a later ordinary sailing can be taken if you miss one; servizio rapido tickets and supplements are valid only on the day of issue and allow no intermediate stops, so a fast ticket is the one to avoid on an uncertain day.

Two live restrictions were in force when we checked. A notice of 6 August 2026 limits car-ferry boarding to vehicles of gross mass not above 100 quintals because of low water, against the normal 400-quintal limit. And a notice of 7 September 2026 let boat-pass holders use the fast run SR 113 on Menaggio to Varenna and Menaggio to Bellagio at no extra cost through 4 October 2026.

The weather worth respecting on this lake is wind rather than rain. The Enciclopedia Italiana names three: the breva, the breeze that runs up the valleys by day; the tivano, the night breeze blowing the opposite way; and the montivi, the variable squall winds behind the lake's reputation for abrupt changes. Nobody official publishes speeds or onset times for any of them, so anything you read in knots came from a sailing site. The ferry page has the services and the ticket page has the fare bands.
