Castello di Vezio
Castello di Vezio is the square medieval keep standing on the promontory at Perledo, directly above the Varenna shoreline, at the point where Lake Como splits into its two southern arms. That position is the whole product: from the terrace you look down the Como branch and the Lecco branch at once, which no other paid viewpoint on this lake gives you. Entry is $8.16 (€7), no booking is required, and two rules decide whether the visit happens at all: the castle closes in bad weather for half the year, and the falconry display that most write-ups still advertise was permanently discontinued after vandalism in October 2022. The village below is on the Varenna page.
Quick answer Price, hours, the weather rule and the walk, in four lines
Entry is $8.16 (€7), no booking is required, and the castle opens every day from 1 March to 1 December, with last entry 20 minutes before closing. In November it closes when it rains, and from December to the end of February it opens only on fair-weather weekends and holidays.
Key takeaways
- The falconry display that most articles still promote was permanently discontinued after vandalism in October 2022. What is there now is the tower, the underground rooms, a botanical garden and a permanent Lariosaurus exhibition in one of the world's most northerly olive groves
- You can buy on the spot in cash or by card, or in advance: a listed entry ticket sat at almost exactly the door price when we read it, which is unusual enough to be worth checking rather than assuming a markup
- The walk up from the lakeshore is signposted and steep, and the castle publishes no walking time for it; the alternative is the road to Perledo. What is down below is on the Varenna page, and Villa Monastero is the obvious pairing

Four ways in, priced from the castle's own prezzi page and from GetYourGuide, read in Q3 2026. The interesting row is the second one: the platform's listed entry ticket sat within a few cents of the castle's own door price when we read it, which almost never happens on this lake and is worth checking on your dates before defaulting to either.
Are you paying for the view and the tower, or for a Varenna afternoon in which the castle is one of three stops?
| Option | Price | Includes | Booking | Book |

| Villa Cipressi gardens entry ticketVisitors making a garden afternoon of it down in the village after the climb | $23.27 | Garden admission at the villa on the Varenna lakefront; the castle is not included | Operator calendar, cancellation set at checkout | Check Availability |

The castle also charges €50 for a photo shoot, which is the fee that applies to anyone arriving with a photographer and a plan rather than a phone. Wedding and portrait parties should settle that on +39 333 4485975 before turning up, since it is not sold at the ticket desk as a standard admission.
Tickets and boats around the Varenna promontory
One of these is the castle admission itself, sold as a listed ticket; the others are the villas and the water below it, which is what most people fill the rest of the afternoon with. Prices in USD as listed by the operator, read in Q3 2026.

What is up there, and what is no longer
The castle is small. What it sells is a position, and a handful of things arranged around it that reward the ticket more than the photographs suggest.
The falconry is gone, permanently
Start here, because it is the reason a lot of visitors arrive disappointed. The castle's own site states that following the tragic vandalism suffered in October 2022, the falconry activity is definitively suspended. Not paused for a season, not moved: ended.
A large share of the blog posts, listicles and even printed guides that rank for this castle still describe the birds of prey as the headline attraction, and some sell an experience around them. They are describing something that stopped happening four years ago. What survives of it is the owl aviary, which visitors are asked to keep dogs away from.
What the $8.16 (€7) actually opens
The tower is furnished and climbable, and it is the platform for the view down both arms of the lake. Below it there are visitable underground rooms, cut into the rock of the promontory. Around it sit a botanical garden, a set of statues, and a permanent exhibition on the Lariosaurus, the small Triassic marine reptile first identified from fossils found on this lake and named after it.
All of that stands in an olive grove, which the castle describes as one of the most northerly in the world. That is not a throwaway line: olives at 46 degrees north exist here because the lake stores enough heat to hold off the frost, and the same effect is why the villa gardens south of here grow camellias and citrus. The best time to visit page has the climate figures behind it.
The view, described properly
The promontory sits at the fork. Look south-west and the Como branch runs away past Bellagio's point; look south-east and the Lecco branch runs down between steeper, darker mountains. Directly below is the Varenna shoreline with the passenger pier and the separate car-ferry ramp, which are listed as two distinct calling points in the operator's own timetables.
On a clear morning you can watch the traghetto crossing to Bellagio and Menaggio from the terrace, which is the single best way to understand how the centre-lake ferry triangle works before you use it.
Hours month by month, and the weather rule
This castle keeps eleven different published schedules across the year, and for four months of it the opening is conditional on the sky. The table is the only honest way to print it.
Two rules sit on top of the table. Last entry is 20 minutes before closing, everywhere in the year. And the castle is open every day from 1 March to 1 December; from 2 December it becomes a weekend-and-holiday operation and the weather decides.
| Month | Monday to Friday | Saturday and Sunday | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| March | 10:00 to 17:00 | 10:00 to 18:00 | Open every day |
| April | 10:00 to 18:00 | 10:00 to 19:00 | Open every day |
| May | 10:00 to 18:00 | 10:00 to 19:00 | Open every day |
| June | 10:00 to 19:00 | 10:00 to 20:00 | Plus fair-weather Friday and Saturday evenings to 22:30 |
| July | 10:00 to 19:00 | 10:00 to 20:00 | Plus fair-weather Friday and Saturday evenings to 22:30 |
| August | 10:00 to 19:00 | 10:00 to 20:00 | Plus fair-weather Friday and Saturday evenings to 22:30 |
| September | 10:00 to 18:00 | 10:00 to 19:00 | Open every day |
| October | 10:00 to 17:00 | 10:00 to 18:00 | Open every day |
| November | 10:00 to 17:00 | 10:00 to 17:00 | Closed if it rains |
| December to February | Closed | 10:00 to 17:00 | Weekends and public holidays only, fair weather only, closed 25 December |
What the weather rule means in practice
From November onwards, and on every winter weekend, the castle's opening is a judgement call made on the day by the people who run it. There is no published cut-off, no rainfall threshold and no telephone recording. The number to call before setting off in those months is +39 333 4485975.
The reason is obvious once you are up there: the site is an open promontory with an unfenced terrace, a stepped path and an exposed tower, and rain on that combination is a liability rather than an atmosphere. Plan the castle for the first fine morning of a winter stay rather than for a fixed day, and keep the Orrido di Bellano up the shore as the wet-weather substitute, since a gorge is one of the few things on this lake that improves in rain.
Getting there: the walk up, and the road
The castle publishes an address and nothing else about arriving. No walking time, no step count, no path description. Here is what is published, and what is ours.
The address is Via al Castello snc, 23828 Perledo, in the comune above Varenna rather than in Varenna itself. The official site gives no walking time from the village, so any figure you read anywhere, including here, is somebody's estimate rather than the castle's.
On foot, the route is the old stepped path that climbs from the Varenna lakefront through the hamlet of Vezio, and it is signposted from the village. Our estimate, from the map and the height gained, is 20 to 30 minutes at a steady pace, and it is a genuine climb rather than a stroll: steps, uneven stone and no shade for the middle stretch. In July and August that matters more than the distance does. Anyone who would rather not do it uphill can ride up and walk down, which turns the hard half into the easy half.
By road, Perledo is reached from the SP72 above Varenna, and there is roadside parking in the hamlet rather than a car park at the gate. On public transport, Varenna is one of the best-served stops on the lake: the passenger pier takes both the slow battello and the servizio rapido on which a supplement is payable, the separate ramp takes the car ferry to Bellagio, Cadenabbia and Menaggio at a published crossing time of 15 minutes, and the Milan to Sondrio railway stops at Varenna-Esino. The ferry page explains which is which.
Accessibility is not stated by the castle at all. Given a stepped approach, underground rooms and a tower, anyone with mobility needs should call rather than assume, on +39 333 4485975.
- Address: Via al Castello snc, Perledo, above Varenna
- On foot: signposted stepped path from the Varenna lakefront; our estimate 20 to 30 minutes uphill
- The castle itself publishes no walking time and no step count
- By boat and train: Varenna has a passenger pier, a separate car-ferry ramp and a railway station
- Accessibility: not stated
How Much Time To Give Castello di Vezio
The castle states no visit length. These three routings are ours, built from what is on the site and how long the climb takes.
The site itself is compact, so the variable is the approach and whether you stay for the light. The one routing that changes the whole character of the visit is the summer evening, which almost nobody plans for.
| Routing | What you get | What it skips | Door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| The view and out | The terrace, the tower and the fork of the two branches from the top | The underground rooms, the garden and the Lariosaurus exhibition | About 30 minutes on site, plus 20 to 30 up and 15 to 20 down |
| The full site | Tower, underground rooms, botanical garden, statues, the Lariosaurus exhibition and the olive grove | Nothing | 45 minutes to an hour on site |
| The summer evening | A fair-weather Friday or Saturday in June, July or August, with the castle lit and open to 22:30 | Nothing, but it needs the weather and a torch for the walk down | Two hours, and the descent is in the dark |
The evening openings to 22:30, and the terrace
The best hour at this castle is one that most day-trippers never see, because it happens after the last boats have taken them back across the lake.
On fair-weather Friday and Saturday evenings in June, July and August, the castle stays open and lit until 22:30. That is three and a half hours past the weekday closing time and two and a half past the weekend one. The lake below goes from gold to black, the lights come on along both shores, and the tower's floodlighting makes the keep visible from the water.
Separately, the castle runs aperitivo and evening events on its lake-view terrace on Friday and Saturday evenings from June to September, and on request. Those are booked on +39 333 4485975 rather than through any ticket page, and no price for them is published anywhere on the site.
Two practical caveats. Fair weather is the condition, judged on the day. And the descent to Varenna is the same stepped path, unlit, so bring a torch or plan the road. Check what is running back across the lake before you commit to a late evening up here: the last departures are timetable business, and the ferry page sets out how the services differ.
Castello di Vezio: The Dates That Decide A Visit
Not a full history, because the castle publishes none. These are the dates its own site does state, and they are the ones that change what you find when you get there.

The falconry ends
After what the castle calls the tragic vandalism suffered in October 2022, the falconry activity is definitively suspended. Third-party write-ups have not caught up.

The daily season opens
From this date the castle is open every day, with closing times that lengthen month by month into June.
-
June, July and August

The last day of the daily season
From 2 December the castle opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and only in fair weather.
-
25 December
The one fixed closure
The single date in the year the castle states as closed outright.
Every date here is published on castellodivezio.it and its orari and prezzi pages, read in Q3 2026. The castle publishes no construction date and no medieval chronology, so none is invented here.
Five Things Most Visitors Do Not Know About Castello di Vezio
All five come off the castle's own pages, and each one changes something practical about the climb.
- The falconry has been over since October 2022, permanently, after vandalism. Anything selling you a bird of prey display here is out of date [castellodivezio.it, read in Q3 2026]. - Dogs of any size are welcome on a leash, kept off the lawns and away from the owl aviary, which makes this one of the most dog-friendly paid sites on the lake [castellodivezio.it]. - A photo shoot costs €50, a published fee rather than a negotiation, and it applies to anyone arriving with a photographer rather than a phone [castellodivezio.it prezzi]. - Residents of Varenna and Perledo go in free with ID, as do Disability Card holders with more than 67 per cent disability and children up to 5 [castellodivezio.it prezzi]. - The olive grove around the castle is described by the castle as one of the most northerly in the world, which is a climate fact rather than a decoration: the lake holds off the frost that should kill olives at this latitude [castellodivezio.it].
At Castello di Vezio: What To Do, And What Not To
Every line here is argued somewhere above, in the form you can act on that morning.
Do
- Call +39 333 4485975 before setting off in November or in winter, when the opening depends on the weather
- Ride or drive up and walk down if the climb worries you; the stepped path is much easier in that direction
- Aim for a fair-weather Friday or Saturday evening in summer, when the castle stays lit until 22:30
- Bring the dog. Any size, on a leash, off the lawns and away from the owl aviary
- Give the underground rooms and the Lariosaurus exhibition ten minutes; most visitors photograph the view and leave
Don't
- Don't come for the falconry. It ended in October 2022 and is not returning
- Don't arrive within 20 minutes of the closing time, which is the published last entry everywhere in the year
- Don't plan a winter weekday visit at all: from 2 December the castle opens only at weekends and on public holidays
- Don't turn up with a photographer without settling the €50 photo-shoot fee first
- Don't assume step-free access; the castle states nothing at all about accessibility, and the approach is stepped

One stop north by boat or trainCastello di Vezio questions
Do you need tickets for Castello di Vezio?
You need a ticket, but you do not need a booking. Entry is $8.16 (€7), $4.66 (€4) for over 65s, groups over 12 and ages 6 to 17, and free for under 6s, for Disability Card holders with more than 67 per cent disability and for residents of Varenna and Perledo with ID. Pay on site in cash or by card. If you prefer it in hand, a listed entry ticket is sold in advance and sat within a few cents of the door price when we read it.
Can you walk up to Castello di Vezio?
Yes. A signposted stepped path climbs from the Varenna lakefront through the hamlet of Vezio to the gate. The castle itself publishes no walking time and no step count, so treat every figure online as an estimate; ours is 20 to 30 minutes uphill at a steady pace. It is a real climb on uneven stone with little shade, so in July and August it is worth doing early or riding up and walking down. The village at the bottom is on the Varenna page.
Is the walk to Castello di Vezio difficult?
It is short but steep, on steps and uneven stone, and unshaded for much of the way. Anyone comfortable with twenty minutes of stairs will be fine; anyone who would rather not will find the descent much easier than the ascent, so going up by road and walking down is the sensible reversal. The castle states nothing about accessibility, and the site itself has underground rooms and a tower. Longer routes on this shore are on the hiking page.
Is there still falconry at Castello di Vezio?
No. The castle states that after the vandalism it suffered in October 2022, the falconry activity is definitively suspended. A great many articles and listings still advertise it, and they are four years out of date. The owl aviary remains, and visitors are asked to keep dogs well away from it. What the ticket does open is set out in what is up there.
What are the Castello di Vezio opening hours?
They change with the month: 10:00 to 17:00 on March weekdays, out to 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays in June, July and August and 10:00 to 20:00 at the weekend, back to 10:00 to 17:00 in October and November. Last entry is always 20 minutes before closing. The castle is open every day from 1 March to 1 December; after that it opens only on fair-weather Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and it closes on 25 December. The full grid is in hours month by month.
Does Castello di Vezio close in bad weather?
Yes, for a large part of the year. November is open daily but closes if it rains, and from 2 December to the end of February the castle opens only on weekends and public holidays and only in fair weather. There is no published rainfall threshold and no recorded message, so +39 333 4485975 is the number to call before you climb. The wet-weather alternative on this shore is the Orrido di Bellano, which is a gorge and reads better in rain.
Can you bring a dog to Castello di Vezio?
Yes. Dogs of any size are allowed on a leash, and the castle asks that they be kept off the lawns and green areas and at a safe distance from the owl aviary. That makes it one of the more permissive paid sites on the lake; among the villas, only Villa Melzi goes further by admitting dogs to its museum and chapel. Every venue's dog rule is compared on the things to do index.
Where Castello di Vezio fits in a day on the lake
Do it first, and do it early. The climb is the hardest thing you will do that day, the terrace is emptiest before the mid-morning boats arrive, and the light down both branches is better before noon. Come down for lunch in Varenna, spend the afternoon at Villa Monastero on the lakefront, and take the car ferry across to Bellagio or Menaggio in the late afternoon if you want a third shore in the same day.
In summer there is a second pattern that is better than the first: skip the morning entirely, take the fair-weather Friday or Saturday evening opening, and be on the terrace at 21:00 with the lake going dark under you. Bring a torch for the way down. Everything else on the lake that charges an entry is indexed on things to do, and the whole Lake Como guide starts from the homepage.
