Luigi Erba builds it, and Carla inherits

The villa was built in the nineteenth century by Luigi Erba, brother of Carlo Erba, the founder of the Erba pharmaceutical company, and it was built to express his standing rather than to be discreet. After Luigi's death it passed to his daughter Carla, who lived from 1880 to 1939, and was used by her family.

Carla's son was Luchino Visconti, and the Villa Antica is where he spent his summers. That is why the address is Largo Luchino Visconti 4: you arrive on a square named after the director whose family holidays happened behind the gate.

1986: the consortium and the congress centre

In 1986 a public consortium bought the property to run it as an exposition and congress centre, and that is what it is today. The estate now comprises the nineteenth-century Villa Antica, a modern congress centre of more than 10,000 square metres designed by Mario Bellini, the Parco Secolare and the Galoppatoio.

The Bellini building is a circular pavilion with three wings, Lario, Cernobbio and Regina, and holds twenty-eight meeting rooms ranging from fifty to 1,500 seats. It is a serious piece of infrastructure rather than a garden folly, and its existence is the reason the estate has no visiting hours: the calendar belongs to whoever has booked the halls.

Why the honest version matters

There is a genre of Lake Como article that lists Villa Erba among the villas to see, next to Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello, without mentioning that the first two sell tickets and this one does not. A visitor who follows that advice arrives at a gate in Cernobbio with nothing to buy.

So the plain statement, which is ours and which the official site supports at every point: Villa Erba is not a ticketed visitor attraction, publishes no opening hours, no admission price and no accessibility statement, and opens to the public only when an event does.

The exception worth planning around is the estate's own public programme, Le 4 Stagioni di Villa Erba, run with the Teatro Sociale di Como and AsLiCo. On those days entry is free and booking is compulsory, which is the venue's own wording.

One such day was published for 2026: a Parco in Festa afternoon on Monday 13 July, with the itinerant dance performance Moving Landscape at 18:30 and 19:30, staged in the park and in the Villa Antica. An itinerant performance is exactly the format that gets you moved around a property you otherwise cannot enter, which is what makes these days worth more than their price.

What to do about it: the programme is published on the estate's culture pages rather than on a visitor page, so check villaerba.it before a trip rather than expecting to find the dates in a guidebook, and book as soon as a date appears. Free plus compulsory booking on a lakeside estate with a limited park capacity is a combination that closes fast. The tickets hub collects what else on this lake has to be reserved.

Every one of those is drawn from the villa's Wikipedia entry and the sources it cites, because the official site does not publish a filmography. That matters if a film location is your reason for coming: nothing on the estate is signposted, and there is no location tour to buy. It also explains why the property is so often photographed from the water rather than from inside the gate.

One piece of family history joins the two halves of this page. Luchino Visconti, who summered here, was one of the directors who made Italian cinema what it is. The estate that hosted his childhood summers now hosts other people's shoots, and neither is something you can walk in and see.

The pattern is worth naming. Where a Lake Como villa is shut, it is almost never a preservation decision: it is because the building is still doing a job, as a conference centre, a hotel, a family home or a works site. The gardens are what get opened, because a garden can take visitors without the owner moving out.

Unless a public day or an event has put a date in your calendar, this is a place you look at rather than visit. The productive version of the afternoon runs along the shore: the free park at Villa Olmo, the walk north through Cernobbio past this gate and the Villa d'Este wall, and a table or a boat rather than a ticket at the end of it.
